AR Rahman’s seaside-and-African tunes for Dhanush-starrer Maryan’s soundtrack has been voted ‘Tamil Album of Year’ on the iTunes Best of 2013 list. The accolade and recognition is nothing new for the songs from the film helmed by ad filmmaker Bharat Bala, which released mid-2013. Maryan, the character played by Dhanush in the film, is a moving tale of how a fisherman from the Coromandel coast goes to work in Central Africa to earn money. He is all set to return home to his home and lover when he is kidnapped by mercenaries and held hostage till he makes his way home.
There were a total of seven tracks in the album and while the film met with a mixed response at the box office, the album had a dream run, topping charts.
The opening track "Nenjae Yezhu" is the pick of the lot. It has a sweeping, epic quality, and there is really no substitute to Rahman’s own vocals. Immediately after the release of the film’s track, the song Nenjae Ezhu, sung by Rahman himself, became a stupendous hit and had garnered close to 1 crore hits online. Similarly, Kadal Raasa Naan marked the first time that Yuvan Shankar Raja sang for the Mozart of Madras.
The sweet sound of accordions in "Innum Konjam" is steeped in folksy innocence underlined by singers, Vijay Prakash and Shweta Mohan. Maryan is AR Rahman's best album in recent times and is worthy sountrack to be chosen as Tamil album of the year in ITunes. Sony Music had also played a role in aggressively marketing it.
