Santhanam's joke on Tobacco 'Mukesh' ad ends with trouble for 'All in All Azhaguraja'
The teaser of director M. Rajesh’s forthcoming film All in All Azhagu Raja seems not to be accepted happily by the anti-tobacco lobby. It has been reported that Tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC) has written to the health secretary seeking a ban on the teaser which features Santhanam copying an anti-tobacco video.

Actor Santhanam making an anti-tobacco campaign the butt of a joke in Karthi-starrer 'All in All Azhaguraja,' has got the Tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC) fuming. The forum has written to health secretary J Radhakrishnan seeking a ban on the teaser which makes fun of the public interest short film that depicts the story of Mukesh Harane, a 24-year-old tobacco user who died of oral cancer. It has also sought the removal of the scene from the film and a public apology from the director.

In the 'objectionable' scene, Karthi and Santhanam are shown having a drink in a movie theatre. Karthi says all that's lacking is a smoke. Santhanam reminds him of Mukesh's message, to which Karthi asks: "Who, Mukesh Ambani?" Santhanam corrects: "Gutka Mukesh", imitating Mukesh Harane. He mocks Mukesh's voice. Karthi finally says he doesn't want to smoke.
In a letter to the health secretary, TNPFTC convener S Cyril Alexander said one of the successful advertisements for tobacco control has been the story of Mukesh. "The ad created high level impact on effects of tobacco use," he said. "In the teaser, Karthi says he doesn't want a cigarette in a sarcastic and disgusted tone. The statement's hidden message seems to be that stopping use of tobacco is a disgusting and socially disgraceful act."

Alexander said it would look worse when the teaser is screened right after the ad is shown. "Is it humane to mock the voice of a person who died because of tobacco use? Do we want our young people to think that staying away from tobacco is socially shameful?" he said.

He said that the community working for tobacco control were deeply hurt, he said. " It is also a violation of Section 5 of the Control of Tobacco Products Act, he said.
