Madhan Karky’s lyrical reflections!

For a project that he was involved with almost one and a half year back, lyricist Madhan Karky still remembers in detail his working on Naan Ee.


“Director Rajamouli approached me immediately after the release of Endhiran. He had strong concepts for each song, explained to me the importance of the song in the film’s narrative, gave me detailed profiles of the characters, and even enacted a few scenes, which later came in handy when writing lyrics,” Karky recalls.

Like for instance, the situation for Veesum Velichathiley…, by Karthik, goes like this. The girl is more into her art — micro-sculpting. One night, as she’s working, the power goes off. The hero, who lives opposite to her house, uses dish antennas as reflectors and creates a light source that he beams it into her house and she stars smiling and continues her work.

“Because Rajamouli had told me that the heroine is into micro-sculpting, which involves working with a magnifying glass (a detail which later brilliantly comes into play in the latter part of the script) and pencils, I could weave these elements into the song and use lines like Nun silai seidhidum pon silaiyae/ pencilai seevidum pen silaiye and Un boothakannadi thevai illai/ en kaadhal nee parka kan podhume. Rajamouli felt they really brought out the lovelorn nature of the character,” says the lyricist.

He adds that Konjam Konjam… is a “personal song featuring the hero”, which proves to be an inspiration for heroine for her sculpture, and Lava Lava…, which is from the villain’s point of view. Karky reveals, “Eeda Eeda… is a promotional song that’s child-friendly with simplistic lyrics. It explains the attitude of a housefly who wants revenge.”
