Actor Imran Khan is now formally hitched. He married his girlfriend of eight years, Avantika Malik, at a civil ceremony that took place at Avantika’s Mumbai home, on Monday. The couple decided to opt for a registered marriage as they belong to different religions. After the simple ceremony, the action moved to Imran’s ancestral bungalow at Mumbai’s posh Pali Hill, where his entire family, including his uncle, actor Aamir Khan, was present with wife Kiran Rao as well as ex-wife, Reena Dutta. His children Junaid, 17 and Ira, 12 also joined in.

“I’m not feeling married right now, it’s yet to sink in,”  said Imran, looking dapper in a black bandhgala. At the gate, Imran was stopped by his six cousins, including Aamir’s daughter Ira, who, as per a traditional ritual, demanded money to let him enter. The girls, who had asked for Rs 10lakh, got upset when Aamir advised Imran to bring it down to Rs 10,000. Eventually, Imran was allowed to enter after he paid Rs 1,11,000 and promised to buy dresses and gifts for the girls.

In a departure from the usual trend of Bollywood couples trying to keep their wedding details away from the media, Imran and Avantika came out of the house and freely posed for the shutterbugs.

The Khan family then proceeded to a 5 star hotel in the city for dinner, following which, Imran and Avantika headed home in a car with a white flag that bore the sign ‘Just Married’. Imran’s ancestral home was decorated with lights, flowers and candles for the newly married couple. 
Yesterday, the couple left for Thailand with 50 family members and friends to celebrate the wedding, as well as Imran’s birthday tomorrow, in Phuket. Aamir Khan, however, said, “I and Kiran will not be able to accompany them as we are tied up with the promotion of Dhobi Ghat.” However, he plans to  host a grand reception for the newly weds in February.
